Stoplight Coming to Surf City Bridge May 6 – See Map of Changes

Starting May 6, traffic flow into Surf City is going to change – and if you’re heading on or off the island regularly, it’s worth knowing what to expect.

This comes just days after one of the first busy spring weekends, where delays started building across the bridge and through town. If you felt it then, this next phase may feel different.

What’s Happening

The North Carolina Department of Transportation, working with the Town of Surf City, is installing a temporary traffic signal on the island side of the bridge just before the roundabout.

  • Start date: May 6, 2026
  • Duration: At least two weeks
  • Location: Bridge approach entering the Surf City roundabout (island side)

Traffic coming off the bridge will now be controlled before entering the circle. In some cases, that means you may need to stop before reaching the roundabout.

Starting May 6, traffic flow into Surf City is going to change - and if you’re heading on or off the island regularly, it’s worth knowing what to expect.

What to Expect & Why

  • You may see backups form on or just before the bridge
  • Traffic will enter the roundabout in controlled intervals, not a steady flow
  • Expect slower movement at first as drivers adjust
  • Pedestrian crossings will be more defined and controlled

This will likely be most noticeable during typical peak windows – Friday arrivals, Saturday mid-day traffic, and Sunday departures.

This stretch has become one of the most consistent choke points on the island.

A single bridge, a high-traffic roundabout, steady pedestrian movement, and a growing mix of locals and visitors all feed into the same space. When volume increases, the flow breaks down.

This pilot is designed to control how traffic enters the roundabout and reduce stop-and-go conditions during busy periods.

It’s also important to note, this isn’t just about cars – it’s also aimed at reducing the stop-and-go caused by pedestrian crossings around the roundabout.

Pedestrian & Cycling Changes

  • One side of the roundabout walkway will be temporarily closed
  • Pedestrians and cyclists will be routed along a designated path around the opposite side
  • Crossings will be more controlled, with fewer access points than usual

If you regularly walk or bike across the bridge or through this area, expect your normal route to change. Follow posted detours and plan for a slightly longer path during the test period.

How to Plan Ahead

  • Give yourself extra time heading on or off the island
  • Expect your normal drive times to shift, especially early on
  • Stay alert for updated signage and pedestrian changes

It’s a temporary setup for now, but it’s a clear sign that traffic patterns in Surf City are starting to change as we head into the season.
