Traffic Picks Up Across Topsail Island Today – And It’s Just the Start

Quick take: Today felt like one of the first real signs that the Topsail season is starting. Warm weather brought people out early – and by evening, traffic was already backing up around the Surf City bridge and the rotaries on both sides.

As of late afternoon Saturday (pictured), traffic was already slowing significantly around the bridge and backing up through both traffic circles. Expect continued slowdowns through evening hours.

It’s not peak summer. We’re past spring break, and the biggest tourist waves haven’t hit yet. But days like this show how quickly things can ramp up when conditions line up.

Locals, day visitors, and early-season renters all moved at once this afternoon – and that overlap is enough to slow things down, even this time of year.

Where Traffic Is Slowing Down

By late afternoon, traffic was building along NC-210 near the Surf City bridge, with slowdowns extending through the traffic circles on both sides of the island.

With limited ways on and off Topsail Island, even a moderate increase in volume can create noticeable backups, especially as people begin heading out around the same time.

What Drove It Today

  • Warm, clear weather brought steady beach traffic
  • Late afternoon is when most people head off the island
  • Local traffic and exiting visitors overlapped at the same time

It doesn’t take peak-season crowds to create backups here – just the right mix of weather, timing, and people moving at once.

This Is How the Season Starts

Days like today are an early preview of what’s ahead. As more weekends like this stack up heading into summer, these slowdowns become more significant, and far more consistent – especially around peak arrival and departure times.

If you’re heading off the island this evening, expect stop-and-go conditions around the bridge and delays through Surf City. Some drivers may look north toward Sneads Ferry as an alternate route, though that can add distance depending on your destination.

For now, it’s a great reminder: this is about as quiet as it gets before the season really ramps up.
