For actual ice cream, Scoops Microcreamery in Topsail Beach makes it in small batches on the island, Celtic Creamery and Island Delights are both in Surf City, and Boombalatti's in Hampstead makes theirs in house with North Carolina dairy. For gelato, Italian ice and shaved ice, there is Cafe Frutta Fresca in North Topsail Beach, Pelican's SnoBalls and Island Crush.
Worth knowing before you drive: The Daily Grind and New York Corner Deli carry more reviews than most of the shops above, but they are a coffee shop and a deli that also sell ice cream. Sea Blue is coffee first, and Larry's is barbecue.
Several of the smaller places are walk-up windows with no seating, and at least one runs seasonally, so call ahead in the off months.
