Poplar Grove Plantation is a beautifully preserved 1850s Greek‑Revival mansion situated on 14+ acres in Scotts Hill, near Wilmington. Built by enslaved artisans of the Foy family, the 12‑room manor stands alongside original outbuildings—kitchen, smokehouse, tenant house, blacksmith and print workshops—offering rich architectural and cultural history.
Living Heritage & Exhibits
As part of the National Register and the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, the site highlights agricultural traditions—especially peanuts and sweet potatoes—tied to enslaved and tenant communities. Its exhibits include an African‑American history display, blacksmithing classes, basket‑weaving, and seasonal events like open‑air markets, herb fairs, live music, and even paranormal ghost tours.
Programs & Community Events
Open March through November, Poplar Grove Museum offers guided tours, school field trips, group visits, and facility rentals for gatherings. Weekly open‑air markets and annual festivals create a vibrant community atmosphere. The site supports education, inclusiveness, and a dialogue around local Revolutionary‑Era and Civil War‑era histories, ensuring ongoing relevance and engagement.
