With just one week before students return to Pender County schools, drivers through Hampstead are still feeling the squeeze of ongoing work on the $182 million Hampstead Bypass project. Lane shifts and overnight closures near Topsail High School and the Hampstead water tower have become routine, but as morning traffic ramps up for buses and parents next week, the impact – and frustrations – are expected to quickly grow.

The Topsail Guide editorial team visited the area this week, where crews continue widening NC-17 and preparing for the elevated bypass connection. Orange barrels, narrowed lanes, and shifting traffic patterns remain in place. Overnight work has led to lane closures lasting through 6:30 a.m., a schedule that will overlap with the first bell for area schools starting Monday, August 25.

On local social media groups, residents have voiced concerns about delays, sudden slowdowns, and road debris in construction zones.
