Burgaw Boil-Water Advisory: What Residents Need to Know — and How to Prep

The Town of Burgaw has issued a boil-water advisory after a water main break on Wednesday, July 16. The alert affects several downtown streets and is expected to stay in place until at least noon on Thursday, July 17.

Homes and businesses on East Wilmington Street (400–600 block), parts of South Campbell and South Bennett Streets are affected. Until the advisory is lifted, town officials recommend using bottled or boiled water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and washing dishes. Source: WECT

What to Do If You’re Affected

  • Boil tap water rapidly for at least one full minute before using it for anything you’ll put in your mouth.
  • Let it cool and store it in clean containers for later use.
  • Tap water is still safe for showering, laundry, and cleaning—just avoid swallowing it.

Why This Keeps Happening

This isn’t the first time residents have dealt with water issues. In recent years, aging water lines and sudden weather changes have caused multiple disruptions in the Burgaw and Hampstead areas. Back in 2019, a water shortage hit eastern Pender County when high summer use drained supply lines faster than they could be refilled. Emergency hookups with Surf City and Wilmington had to be activated. Source: StarNews

Heavy storms can also stress the system. After Hurricane Florence in 2018, treatment plants were knocked offline by flooding. Some locals still worry about how quickly water quality can change during big weather events. Source: WRAL

Storms Are on the Way—Use This Time Wisely

Tropical Storm Chantal is expected to bring wind and rain to our area soon. While extra rainfall might help refill storage tanks, it also puts pressure on old pipes. Residents should take this time to check their own emergency water supplies and avoid unnecessary water use this week.

Easy Water-Saving Tips

  • Turn off sprinklers and hold off on washing cars.
  • Keep a few gallons of bottled water on hand for each person in your home.
  • Skip running the dishwasher or washing machine until the system is stable again.

Don’t Forget to Stay Hydrated

Even with water restrictions, it’s important to drink plenty of fluids – especially during this hot and humid stretch. Aim for at least 64 ounces (about 2 liters) of water per day, and more if you’re outside or active. If you’re using boiled water, make sure it’s fully cooled before drinking.
